    Can digital libraries provide a reading experience that more closely resembles a real book than a scrolled or paginated electronic display? This paper describes a prototype page-turning system that realistically animates full three-dimensional page-turns. The dynamic behavior is generated by a mass-spring model defined on a rectangular grid of particles. The prototype takes a PDF or E-book file, renders it into a sequence of PNG images representing individual pages, and animates the pageturns under user control. The simulation behaves fairly naturally, although more computer graphics work is required to perfect it

    Performance Modeling of the PeopleSoft Multi-Tier Remote Computing Architecture

    Complex client-server configurations being designed today require a new and closely coordinated approach to analytic modeling and measurement. A closed queuing network model for a two-tiered PeopleSoft 6 client-server system with an Oracle database server is demonstrated using a new performance modeling tool that applies mean value analysis. The focus of this work is on the measurement and modeling of the PeopleSoft architecture to provide useful capacity planning insights for an actual large-scale university-wide deployment. A testbed and database exerciser are then developed to measure model parameters and perform the initial validation tests. The testbed also provides preliminary test data on a proposed three-tiered deployment architecture that includes the Citrix WinFrame environment as an intermediate level between the client and the Oracle server.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/107929/1/citi-tr-97-5.pd

    A shared-aperture dual-band dual-polarized filtering-antenna-array with improved frequency response

    In this paper, a novel dual-band dual-polarized (DBDP) array antenna with low frequency ratio and integrated filtering characteristics is proposed. By employing a dual-mode stub-loaded resonator (SLR) to feed and tune with two patches, the two feed networks for each polarization can be combined, resulting in the reduction of the feed networks and the input ports. In addition, owing to the native dual resonant features of the SLR, the proposed antenna exhibits 2nd-order filtering characteristics with improved bandwidth and out-of-band rejections. The antenna is synthesized and the design methodology is explained. The coupling coefficients between the SLR and the patches are investigated. To verify the design concept, a C/X-band element and a 2 × 2 array are optimized and prototyped. Measured results agree well with the simulations, showing good performance in terms of bandwidth, filtering, harmonic suppression and radiation at both bands. Such an integrated array design can be used to simplify the feed of a reflector antenna. To prove the concept, a paraboloid reflector fed by the proposed array is conceived and measured directivities of 24.6 dBi (24.7 dBi) and 28.6 dBi (29.2 dBi) for the X-polarization (Y-polarization) are obtained for the low- and high-band operations, respectively

    Effect of non-lattice oxygen on ZrO2-based resistive switching memory

    ZrO2-based resistive switching memory has attracted much attention according to its possible application in the next-generation nonvolatile memory. The Al/ZrO2/Pt resistive switching memory with bipolar resistive switching behavior is revealed in this work. The thickness of the ZrO2 film is only 20 nm. The device yield improved by the non-lattice oxygen existing in the ZrO2 film deposited at room temperature is firstly proposed. The stable resistive switching behavior and the long retention time with a large current ratio are also observed. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the resistive switching mechanism agrees with the formation and rupture of a conductive filament in the ZrO2 film. In addition, the Al/ZrO2/Pt resistive switching memory is also possible for application in flexible electronic equipment because it can be fully fabricated at room temperature
